Overview

Living Design is Walmart's enterprise design system, shared across products, teams and customer experiences. Version 2.0 set its governance, interaction standards and design principles, with guidance for progressive disclosure, error handling and system states, so the system could hold at Walmart's scale and be treated as an investment in faster delivery and product quality.

Living Design transition mapping: web and app sticker sheets, the styleguide with core components, web and app libraries, and the workflows from Zeplin to design tokens and coded components.

LD2.0 to DSM symbols construction: style guide linked as a library, a mini UI kit of styles and elements, symbol instances, then components added to DSM.

Team responsibilities: symbols construction, taxonomy QA against the text-style naming convention, and regular testing from Sketch to DSM.

LD symbols to DSM workflow: component assigned, team meeting, onboarding, dividing the work, first review, final review, file merge, and component and documentation in DSM.

DSM, December 2019 to January 2020: what the trial taught, master symbols, all styles in one place, and one file per component, the start of LD3.

LD3 Zeplin styleguides: a cross-platform base styleguide for colors, icons, text styles and spacing, extended into web, iOS and Android styleguides and connected projects.

LD3 iOS styleguides: color, layout, typography, icons and graphics, in an extended styleguide for the Living Design team and a simplified one for product designers.

LD3 iOS components: the component inventory, from alerts and bottom sheets to tabs, tooltips and badges.

Creating a new component in six stages: new request, look around, design system research, define a framework, prepare the proposal, share with the team.

Adding a new component: the full flow from proposal through review to publishing in the library.

Styleguides management: the folder and file structure for the simplified and extended LD3 styleguides.

General recommendations: plugins, automation, and workflow tips for keeping libraries current and shared.
