For the length of a trip, the Live Activity is the app.

The arrival follows the rider across the Dynamic Island, the Lock Screen, and StandBy, so one activity has to hold from a compact pill to a full screen. The track, the position on it, and the time never drop, and the route's gradient carries line identity at every size.

Apple requires a single Live Activity to support four presentations, and the compact one is split in two by the TrueDepth camera — a leading element and a trailing element that must still read as one piece of information.[1]

Apple does not allow a custom background in the compact, minimal, or expanded presentations — they render on black. Identity had to come from the content itself, so the route gradient became the one element that survives every size.[1]

Carried forward: a worn display gets one presentation, smaller than the compact pill, held off-axis in a single lens and dark most of the time. The three elements that never drop — the track, the position on it, and the time — turned out to be the only three that fit.

A rider glances at a pill thirty-six points tall and knows which line, how far along, and how long. The same three values hold on a full screen and on a worn lens, drawn from the same tokens and never redrawn for the surface. The trip ends before the app is ever opened.
